Running coaching: what to know
What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.
What running coaching is
Running coaching is a service where a coach designs training plans, analyzes your form and pacing and gives feedback to help you run faster, farther or with fewer injuries.
Signs you need it
- You want to run farther
- Your pace has stalled
- You get sore or hurt often
- You want a race plan
- You are new to running
What the pro does
- Intake on goals and experience
- Form review in person or on video

What changes the price
Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.
- Coaching frequency
- Form analysis
- Plan length
- Group or private
- Race goals
- Communication
What a written quote should spell out
- Plan length
- What feedback is included
- How often you talk
- Cancellation terms
- Form analysis
Questions to ask before you hire
- What certifications do you hold?
- How do you handle injuries?
- How do you set pace?
- How often do we talk?
- Do you review video?
- How do you build for a race?
Red flags
- Increasing mileage fast
- Ignoring pain
- Generic plan
- Guaranteed times
- Pressure to prepay
What you can do yourself
You can start with walking intervals and comfortable shoes. Talk with your doctor before starting if you have health conditions, an injury or take medication.
Licenses and permits
No license is usually required to coach fitness. Ask about any certification, first aid and CPR training, and liability insurance, and how to verify each with the issuer, and ask for a client reference.
Running coaching questions
Do I need a plan?
A plan helps you add distance gradually and include rest, which can reduce the chance of overdoing it.
How do you check form?
A coach watches you run in person or on video and gives cues, such as foot strike and posture.
Can I run with a group?
Some coaches run group sessions. Ask about pace groups and meeting places.
What shoes?
Shoes that fit comfortably for your foot and running surface. A running shop can help you try pairs.
