What you can do yourself
You can build a base with regular easy runs. Talk with your doctor before starting if you have health conditions, an injury or take medication. A marathon asks a lot, so get medical advice first.
Licenses and permits
No license is usually required to coach fitness. Ask about any certification, first aid and CPR training, and liability insurance, and how to verify each with the issuer, and ask for a client reference.
Marathon training questions
How long do I need?
It depends on your base and the plan. Ask the coach how many weeks they recommend for your starting point.
Can a beginner run one?
Many beginners do with a gradual plan, but talk with your doctor first and give yourself enough time.
What about fueling?
Practice eating and drinking on long runs, and ask a dietitian for specifics, especially with health conditions.
Can I join a group?
Some coaches run group long runs. Ask about pace groups and routes.
