Questions to ask before you hire
- Do you offer an intro program?

Red flags
- Pushing to max out on day one
- No scaling
- Ignoring pain
- Huge classes
- No intro program
What you can do yourself
You can learn basic movements like squats and push-ups, but barbell and gymnastic moves are best learned with a coach. Talk with your doctor before starting if you have health conditions, an injury or take medication.
Licenses and permits
No license is usually required to coach fitness. Ask about any certification, first aid and CPR training, and liability insurance, and how to verify each with the issuer, and ask for a client reference.
CrossFit training questions
Is CrossFit safe?
With coaching and scaling, but ask.
Do I need to be fit?
No. Ask about an intro program and how movements are scaled for new athletes.
Can I watch a class?
Many gyms let you watch or try an intro class. Ask before signing up.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes you can move in and flat, stable shoes for lifting.
