Microdermabrasion: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What microdermabrasion is

A skin professional uses a handheld device to gently exfoliate the outer layer of skin with crystals or a diamond tip. Microdermabrasion is often used to smooth skin texture and to brighten dull skin, and it usually needs a series of visits.

Signs you need it

  • Your skin feels rough, dull or uneven in texture
  • You want a gentle exfoliation without a deep peel
  • You have fine lines or mild sun damage and want a light refresh
  • You want a skin treatment with little downtime before an event
  • You want a treatment plan that builds up slowly over several visits

What the pro does

  • Reviews your skin type, sun exposure, products and any medications
  • Cleanses the skin and checks it for any sensitivity, broken areas or active conditions
  • Passes the device over the skin in controlled strokes at the setting for your skin
  • Clears the treated area and checks the skin for any issues
  • Applies a soothing product and sun protection after the treatment
  • Gives you a home care plan and a schedule for the next visit

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • The area treated, such as the face, neck or body
  • The type of device and tip used, such as crystals or diamond
  • How many sessions are planned for the result you want
  • Whether a consultation, facial or extra products are included
  • Your skin sensitivity and any extra time needed for it
  • The experience of the provider and the setting where the treatment is done

What a written quote should spell out

  • The treatment area and the number of sessions in the plan
  • Whether a consultation and skin check are included
  • The aftercare products and whether they are part of the service
  • The time between sessions and the follow-up plan
  • The cancellation and reschedule terms

Questions to ask before you hire

  • What results can I expect from this treatment for my skin type?
  • How many sessions do I need, and how far apart should they be?
  • What device and setting do you use, and do you adjust it for sensitive skin?
  • Will I have redness or flaking afterward, and for how long?
  • What sun protection and products should I use after the treatment?
  • Are there any medications or skin conditions that make this treatment unsafe for me?
  • What should I do if my skin feels irritated after the session?

Red flags

  • Uses the device on skin that is broken, sunburned or inflamed
  • Skips the skin check or the consultation before treatment
  • Promises that the treatment will remove deep scars or wrinkles in one session
  • Pressures you into a large package before you see results
  • Does not give you aftercare guidance or sun protection advice

What you can do yourself

You can gently exfoliate your skin with a soft cleanser and protect it with daily sunscreen. Avoid harsh scrubs and acid products in the days before and after a session. Hire a trained professional for the treatment itself, because the device needs the right setting and technique for your skin, and see a doctor first if you have an active skin condition.

Licenses and permits

Microdermabrasion is commonly covered by state esthetics or cosmetology rules, and most states require an esthetician license for paid skin treatments. Check with your state's esthetics or cosmetology licensing board before you book.

Microdermabrasion questions

Does microdermabrasion hurt?

Most people feel a light tingling or a mild scraping sensation. Tell the provider if it is uncomfortable, because the device setting can be adjusted.

How soon will I see a result?

Some people see a change in texture after a session, and the full plan usually takes several visits. Ask the provider what to expect for your skin.

Can I wear makeup afterward?

Ask the provider. Many people wait until the skin has calmed down and has been protected with sunscreen before applying makeup.
