Hair braiding: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What hair braiding is

A hair braider creates braided styles such as box braids, cornrows, twists, knotless braids and feed-in braids. The work takes a lot of time and skill, and the style often lasts several weeks with good care.

Signs you need it

  • You want a protective style that keeps your hair tucked away for several weeks
  • You want box braids, cornrows, twists or another braided look that is hard to do yourself
  • You need a style that works with your hair texture and scalp
  • You want a braided style for a special event that holds up for days
  • You want a braider who knows how to part, tension and finish hair of your type

What the pro does

  • Looks at your hair type, scalp, length and any previous braid damage
  • Washes, detangles and prepares the hair, or checks that it is ready to braid
  • Parts the hair into even sections for the chosen style
  • Adds hair, if the style calls for it, and braids with steady, even tension
  • Finishes the ends, applies oil or a light product, and checks the tension
  • Shows you how to care for the braids to keep them neat and comfortable

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • The style, such as small box braids, cornrows or knotless braids
  • The length and thickness of the braids you want
  • How much added hair is needed and whether you supply it
  • The number of hours the style takes, which depends on size and pattern
  • Whether a wash, detangle or scalp prep is included
  • Whether you want a design, a pattern or a special part

What a written quote should spell out

  • The style, the braid size and the approximate length
  • Whether the added hair is included or purchased separately, and what type
  • Whether washing, detangling or scalp prep is included
  • The expected appointment length and whether it is a single day or several sessions
  • The cancellation and late arrival terms

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Can I see photos of the style on hair like mine, from the back and the side?
  • How long will the braids take, and how long will they last?
  • How do you control tension so the braids do not pull on my scalp?
  • What hair do you use, and is it safe for my scalp and hair type?
  • Do you wash or detangle the hair before braiding?
  • What do you do if I have tender spots or sensitivity during the appointment?
  • How should I care for the braids, and how do I take them out safely?

Red flags

  • Braids that are pulled tight on the scalp with no check for comfort
  • Will not show the back of their work or photos of the style after several weeks
  • Does not ask about your scalp, allergies or past hair damage
  • Uses unknown added hair or cannot name the type
  • Pushes you to keep braids in much longer than the plan you discussed

What you can do yourself

You can keep your hair moisturized, detangled and clean before a braid appointment. Learn simple ways to care for braids, such as light oil on the scalp and a silk or satin wrap at night. Hire a braider for tight or complex styles, for large sections of braids, for added hair, or for any style that takes many hours to do safely.

Licenses and permits

Rules for braiding differ by state. Some states exempt braiding from cosmetology licensing, and others require a braiding license or a cosmetology license. Check with your state's cosmetology or licensing board before you book.

Hair braiding questions

How long does a braid appointment take?

It depends on the style, the size and your hair length. Smaller braids take longer than larger ones. Ask the braider for a time estimate before you book.

Can braids damage my hair?

Tight braids, heavy added hair and long wear can cause hair loss or scalp soreness. Ask for gentle tension, tell the braider about tenderness, and take the braids out on time.

Should I bring my own added hair?

Ask the braider first. Some prefer to supply the hair, and others let you bring your own. Make sure you know the type and amount before the appointment.
