Barber: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What barber is

A barber cuts, fades and trims hair and facial hair, often with clippers and a razor. Barbers focus on clean lines, shape and quick upkeep, and many clients see the same barber on a steady schedule.

Signs you need it

  • Your hairline or neckline has grown out and needs to be cleaned up
  • You want a fade, taper or line-up that holds a sharp shape
  • Your beard needs trimming, shaping or a clean edge
  • You want a shave with a straight razor or a hot towel service
  • You want a steady routine with the same barber who knows your style

What the pro does

  • Asks what length and shape you want, and checks your hair texture and growth
  • Sets the guard lengths for the clippers and blends the sides and back
  • Shapes the top with scissors or clippers to match the style you chose
  • Lines up the hairline, neckline and sideburns with a trimmer or razor
  • Trims or shapes the beard if you asked for it
  • Finishes with a check in the mirror and a product suggestion for your hair

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • The style, such as a basic taper, a skin fade or a detailed design
  • Whether a beard trim, shave or hot towel service is included
  • Hair thickness and how much time the cut takes
  • Whether you want a special design or hair pattern
  • How often you come in, since maintenance cuts are shorter
  • The barber's experience and the demand for their chair

What a written quote should spell out

  • The haircut style and whether the line-up is included
  • Whether beard trimming, a shave or a hot towel service is part of the visit
  • Whether a design or pattern is included and how it is priced
  • The expected time for the visit
  • The cancellation and late arrival terms

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Can I see photos of fades or cuts you have done on hair like mine?
  • How long will the cut hold before I need a line-up?
  • What clipper guards and blades do you use, and how do you clean them?
  • Do you clean your tools between clients?
  • What product do you recommend to keep the cut looking sharp?
  • Can you do a beard shape that matches my face and my hair?
  • What do you do if the line-up or fade is not what I wanted?

Red flags

  • Uses dirty clippers or blades, or will not say how they clean tools
  • Will not ask about your style, your hairline or your skin before starting
  • Cuts a fade or line that is far from the photo you showed without discussing it
  • Pressures you to add services you did not ask for
  • No clear plan for fixing a cut you are not happy with

What you can do yourself

You can keep your neckline and beard edges clean between visits with a trimmer and a mirror. Learn to use a clipper guard on the back and sides so you can keep the length even. Hire a barber for fades, detailed line-ups, straight razor shaves and any cut that needs a clean, sharp finish across the whole head.

Licenses and permits

Barbering is commonly covered by state barbering or cosmetology rules, and most states require a barber license for paid haircuts and shaves. Check with your state's barbering or cosmetology licensing board before you book, especially for shaves.

Barber questions

How often should I get a line-up?

It depends on the style and how fast your hair grows. Ask your barber how often they recommend a line-up for the fade you want.

Is a straight razor shave safe?

A shave with a straight razor should be done with clean tools and a fresh blade. Ask the barber how they clean and sanitize their tools, and tell them about any skin sensitivity or irritation.

Should I bring a photo?

Yes. A photo helps the barber understand the length, fade and shape you want. Tell them what you like and dislike about the photo, and ask whether it suits your hair type.
