Candy buffet: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What candy buffet is

A candy buffet designer sets up a display of candies in jars and bowls, styled to match your colors and theme, with scoops and bags for guests. Hosts order one for weddings, birthdays, showers and parties where a colorful candy table adds to the decor and gives guests something to take home.

Signs you need it

  • You want a colorful candy display that matches your party's colors and theme
  • Guests will enjoy scooping their own candy into bags to take home
  • You want the candy table to be a feature of the decor, not just a snack
  • You need the display set up before guests arrive and cleared after the event
  • You want jars, bowls and scoops that suit the event's style

What the pro does

  • Talks with you about the colors, the theme and the candy types you want
  • Chooses the candies and checks the ingredients and allergens with you
  • Sets up the display with jars, bowls, scoops, labels and bags
  • Refills the candy during the event and keeps the display neat
  • Places a clear label on each candy with its ingredients
  • Takes down the display and removes the leftover candy at the end

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • Number of jars, bowls and display pieces
  • Number of candy types and the amount of candy needed
  • Custom labels, signs and themed decor
  • Jar and bowl rentals or purchases
  • Guest count and how long the display stays open
  • Delivery distance and whether the designer sets up on site

What a written quote should spell out

  • Each candy type and the amount provided
  • Jars, bowls, scoops, bags and labels included
  • Setup, refill and takedown times
  • Allergen labels and the ingredients for each candy
  • What happens to leftover candy and display items

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Which candies contain nuts, dairy, gluten, dyes or eggs, and how are they labeled?
  • How much candy do you recommend for my guest count?
  • Will you refill during the event, and who does it?
  • Are the scoops and bags included, and what is the plan for melting or sticky candy in heat?
  • Who takes the display down, and when?
  • Can you match the candy colors to our theme?

Red flags

  • Cannot say which candies contain common allergens
  • Will not label the candy with its ingredients
  • Leaves the display in direct sun with no plan for melting
  • Does not confirm the amount of candy in writing
  • Asks for the full payment before the colors and candies are approved

What you can do yourself

A host can fill a few jars with candy from a store, add labels with the allergens and set them out with scoops and bags. Hire a candy buffet designer for a themed display with matching colors, a large guest count, custom signs or a setup that must be refilled through the event.

Licenses and permits

No license is usually required to set up a candy display. If the designer sells or serves candy as food, the food rules of the local office that oversees food safety can apply, so ask whether the candy is prepared or only arranged. Ask for proof of liability insurance.

Candy buffet questions

How much candy do I need for a candy buffet?

Ask the designer for its portion guide. Tell it the guest count, how long the buffet is open and whether guests will fill bags to take home.

Can the candy be labeled for allergens?

Yes. Ask the designer to label each jar with its ingredients and allergens, and keep the nut candies in a separate jar with its own scoop.

Who cleans up the candy after the event?

Ask the designer. Many take down the display and remove leftover candy, but confirm it in the agreement, and say whether you want the leftovers returned to you.
