Mirror installation: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering mirror installation
Mirror installation is a weight and glass-safety job where the customer trusts you with a fragile, expensive item on their wall. Win it by checking the weight, the wall and the method before you lift the mirror.
What customers ask
- Will it fall?
- Is adhesive enough?
- Can you hang a big leaning mirror?
- Will the wall be damaged?
- Can you add safety backing?
- What if it breaks?
How to win the job
- On the call, ask for the mirror size, the weight, the frame type, the wall type and the room, and whether it is for a bathroom.
- Check the mirror's back and hanging points before you choose the method, and show the customer your plan.
- Mark the level line and the hanging points, checking for studs, wires and pipes, and show the customer before you drill.
- Quote the hardware, the anchors, the adhesive, the safety backing and the patching as separate lines.
- Hang the mirror with two people where needed, and check that it is level and secure before you let go.
- Leave a written note on the method, the weight rating and the care steps, including what to do if the mirror moves.
What to put on your profile
- Post photos of hung mirrors with the cleats, clips or anchors visible from the side
- List the mirror types you hang, such as bathroom, leaning and framed wall mirrors
- State the wall types you hang on, and the fixing methods you use
- Show a sample hanging method sheet with the weight rating and details blurred
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Offer safety backing for large mirrors in homes with children or pets
- Suggest a lighting upgrade for a bathroom mirror, done by a licensed electrician
- Recommend a yearly check of clips and anchors on heavy mirrors
Licenses and permits
Mirror installation is not commonly a licensed trade. Hardwired or lighted mirrors often need a licensed electrician, and wall work that cuts into structure can need a permit. Confirm your scope with your state or local licensing agency and your local building office before that work.
Questions
Do I need a license to hang mirrors?
Hanging mirrors is not commonly licensed, but power connections are a separate trade. Check with your state or local licensing agency before you take any work that involves wiring.
What do I do if the wall is too weak for the mirror?
Explain the issue in writing, offer a stud fix or a reinforcement, and do not hang a heavy mirror on a wall you judge unsafe.
Who pays if the mirror breaks during the install?
State the answer in the contract, including who handles the glass, the replacement and the claims. Put the answer in writing before you start.
