Crib assembly: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering crib assembly

Crib assembly is a safety-critical job, and the customer judges you on whether the crib is built exactly to the manual and checked before a baby sleeps in it. Win the job by checking every part and recording the hardware check and the mattress fit.

What customers ask

  • Is the crib safe?
  • Did you check the hardware?
  • Can you assemble a used crib?
  • What about recalls?
  • Will you set up the mattress?
  • How often should I check the bolts?

How to win the job

  • On the call, ask for the crib brand and model number, whether it is new or used, and whether the mattress is already in the home.
  • Check the model against the manufacturer's recall notices and the instructions before you open the box.
  • Reject any crib part that is cracked, bent or missing, and tell the customer in writing what you found.
  • Tighten every bolt to the manufacturer's specification, and record the check on the job sheet.
  • Check the mattress fit with the customer present, and show them the gap check.
  • Leave a written care sheet with the bolt check schedule, the recall contact and the warranty terms.

What to put on your profile

  • Post photos of cribs assembled to the manual, with the hardware tight and the mattress fit visible
  • List the crib brands and models you assemble
  • State your recall check and parts check steps in a short line
  • Show a sample safety check sheet with the details blurred

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Offer a bolt check visit after the first few months, since hardware loosens with use
  • Suggest a conversion check when the child moves to a toddler bed
  • Recommend a mattress fit check when the customer changes the mattress

Licenses and permits

Crib assembly is not commonly a licensed trade. Check the manufacturer's instructions and recall notices for each model. Check with your state or local licensing agency only if your business includes other work in the home that needs a license.

Questions

Should I assemble a used crib?

Only after you check the model for recalls, inspect every part for cracks and wear, and confirm the parts match the manual. If the crib is missing parts or fails the check, tell the customer in writing and do not assemble it.

What do I do if the mattress is too small for the crib?

Stop, and tell the customer the mattress must fit snugly with no gap. Ask them to buy the size the manufacturer lists before you finish the setup.

Should I warranty my assembly?

Warrant your labor in writing, and state that the manufacturer's warranty covers the crib itself. Do not promise a safety result the manufacturer does not state.
