Excel training: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering excel training

You teach Excel, covering formulas, formatting, charts, data sorting and reporting with practical tasks for work or school. Your listing should show the kinds of data and reports you work with and the students you help most.

What customers ask

  • My manager wants a dashboard next week and I do not know where to start. Can you help?
  • How do I stop my formulas from breaking when I copy them down?
  • Can you teach me to use lookups?
  • Do you teach beginners who have never opened a spreadsheet?
  • Can you train our finance team on our own reports?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask what the student uses Excel for, which version they have and what report they need to build.
  • Offer a short review of one of their real spreadsheets, and explain how the first session will be planned from it.
  • Show a sample formula with each part explained, and how to copy it safely without breaking references.
  • Share a short practice file with dummy data that the student can use at home between sessions.
  • Put the skills covered, session count, on-site or online format and practice tasks in the quote.
  • Say how you handle confidential data, so the client knows how their spreadsheets are treated.

What to put on your profile

  • Your spreadsheet experience, such as finance, data, office or reporting work and any certifications you hold.
  • The skills you teach, such as formulas, charts, data analysis or reporting.
  • Screen examples with dummy data, with no client figures or names visible.
  • The formats you offer, such as one-on-one sessions, team training or on-site workshops.
  • Reviews from clients that name the skill they learned and the report they built, once they agree to share them.

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • After a session, suggest a practice report on the student's own data and the date of the next session.
  • Offer a report template for the student's team when their goal fits, and let them choose.
  • Recommend a data analysis or pivot table session once the student is ready, and let them decide.

Licenses and permits

No license is usually required to teach spreadsheet skills privately. Keep your background, certifications and references ready, and check your state and local rules for any business registration you need.

Questions

Do I need a finance background to teach Excel?

Not usually, but clients look for proof of skill, so describe the spreadsheets you have built and the reports you know how to make.

Can I train on site and online?

Yes, if you offer both. Say which options you offer so clients know what to expect.

Do I pay to join?
