Dressmaking: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering dressmaking

Clients order custom dresses for occasions where the fit and the fabric matter most. Your measuring process, your muslin and your photos of finished dresses are what win bookings and referrals.

What customers ask

  • Can you make a dress from this photo?
  • How many fittings will I need?
  • Do you use a muslin before the final fabric?
  • Can you work with my fabric?
  • How do you finish the inside of the dress?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask for the style, the occasion, the date, the fabric and any photo or pattern the client brings.
  • Show photos of finished dresses from the front, back and inside, with the client's permission.
  • Take full measurements and explain how the bust, waist and hip will be fitted.
  • Make a muslin for new clients or complex designs and explain the fitting steps to them.
  • Put the fabric, lining, number of fittings and completion date in the quote so the client knows what they are ordering.
  • Give a care note for the fabric and the finish, and explain how to store the dress before the event.

What to put on your profile

  • Photos of finished dresses from the front, back and inside, shown with consent
  • A list of dress types you make, such as day dresses, evening gowns, formal and occasion dresses
  • The fabric types you work with and any sources you use
  • Your fitting process, including the muslin and the number of fittings
  • Your business registration and any local permit that applies to your studio

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Offer an alteration visit close to the event to make last-minute changes
  • Suggest a matching accessory or a second dress for the same occasion
  • Offer a garment care plan for the fabric used

Licenses and permits

A license is often not required for dressmaking, but rules differ by state and city. Keep your business registration, any local business license your city requires, and proof of your training on your profile.

Questions

Do I need a license to make dresses for pay?

A license is often not required for dressmaking, but rules differ by state and city. Check your local city or county rules for business licensing and keep your registration current.

How do I handle a client who wants a design I cannot make?

Explain why the design will not work in the fabric or the fit, and show a version that gets close to the goal. Record the decision and the client's approval in writing.

Should I offer a fitting guarantee?

A fitting guarantee tells clients what you will do if the fit is not right at the final fitting. Write it into the quote, with the terms for fixes and changes.
