Smart device setup: what to know
What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.
What smart device setup is
A technician installs and connects smart speakers, thermostats, cameras, locks and lighting, linking them to your network and to a simple app or voice control. You need it when you have new smart devices that will not connect, or when you want them set up securely from the start.
Signs you need it
- New smart devices will not connect to your Wi-Fi or to the app
- A smart lock, camera or thermostat has stopped responding
- You want lights, locks and cameras to work together with voice control
- The devices have default passwords or are not updated
- You are not sure which devices should be on a separate network
What the pro does
- Checks your network, the devices and the app or voice assistant you use
- Connects each device to the network and sets up its account
- Sets strong passwords and turns on the security options the device offers
- Links the devices with routines or voice control, as you ask
- Tests each device and shows you how to use it and where to update it
What changes the price
Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.
- The number of devices and their types
- Whether the devices need a hub or a bridge
- Whether the network needs changes, such as a separate device network
- Whether cameras or locks need wiring or mounting
- Whether the routines and voice control need custom setup
- Whether the job is done at the home or remotely
What a written quote should spell out
- The devices set up and the apps or voice assistants used
- Any hub, bridge or accessory needed, with model
- Any mounting or wiring, listed separately
- Routines and voice control set up, if requested
- Written login details and a short guide for daily use
Questions to ask before you hire
- Which devices will you set up, and which accounts do I need to provide?
- Will the devices use a separate network for security?
- Do you change the default passwords and turn on the security options?
- Can you set up the routines and the voice control I want?
- What happens if a device stops responding after the setup?
- Will you show me how to update the devices?
Red flags
- Asks for the admin password to your main network without a clear reason
- Leaves the default password on a camera or lock
- Connects a camera to the internet without telling you what it shares
- Installs an app you did not agree to
What you can do yourself
Most smart devices come with an app that walks you through setup, so change the default password on each device and keep the app and firmware updated. Do not install a smart lock on a door you have not checked, and do not wire anything into the mains power without a qualified electrician. Call a technician for mounting, wiring or a network problem.
Licenses and permits
A license is usually not required for smart device setup. Wiring or mounting that involves the home's electrical system may need a licensed electrician, so check with your state or local licensing agency.
Smart device setup questions
Should smart devices be on their own network?
Many people do this for security. A technician can set it up and explain whether it suits your devices and your router.
Can a smart camera be hacked?
Any connected device can be at risk. Strong passwords, updates and turning off unused features reduce the risk.
Why does my smart lock keep disconnecting?
Common causes are weak Wi-Fi signal near the door, a dead battery or a hub that is offline. A technician can test each one.
