Computer setup: what to know
What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.
What computer setup is
A technician unboxes and configures a new computer, transfers your files, installs software, sets up accounts, printers and security, and shows you how to use it. You need it when you have a new computer and want it working properly without spending days on the setup yourself.
Signs you need it
- You have bought a new computer and want it set up correctly
- You are moving from an old computer and want your files transferred
- You need printers, scanners or other devices connected and working
- You want accounts, passwords and security configured properly from the start
- You want a short lesson on the features you will use most
What the pro does
- Unboxes the computer and checks the hardware and the operating system
- Sets up the user accounts, the passwords and the security settings
- Transfers your files and settings from the old computer, if you have one
- Installs the software you need and removes unwanted trial programs
- Connects printers and other devices, then walks you through daily use
What changes the price
Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.
- How many files and how much data must be transferred
- The number of programs to install and configure
- Whether there is an old computer to transfer from
- The number of printers and devices to connect
- Whether a backup system or cloud storage must be set up
- Whether the lesson is short or a longer training session
What a written quote should spell out
- The services included, such as setup, transfer and software installation
- How data transfer will be done and how long it will take
- Which programs will be installed and whether licenses are included
- Any device setup and the number of devices
- A short lesson, if included, and its length
Questions to ask before you hire
- Will you transfer my files, and how do you protect them during the move?
- Which programs will you install, and do I need to provide licenses?
- Will you set up my backups so my files are safe?
- Will you remove the trial software that comes with the computer?
- How long will the setup take, and will I get a written summary?
- Can you show me how to use the features I need?
Red flags
- Asks for your passwords without a clear reason
- Installs software you did not ask for
- Pushes an extended warranty or a subscription without explaining it
- Will not explain what the setup includes before starting
What you can do yourself
List the accounts you use, gather the software licenses, and list the printers and devices you need, then back up your old computer before the transfer. Keep passwords in a password manager rather than on paper or in a plain file. Ask the technician to show you how to set up your backups. Call a technician for the transfer and for any device that will not connect.
Licenses and permits
A license is usually not required for computer setup. Check with your state or local licensing agency about any business registration that applies, and ask the technician to show proof of training or past setup work.
Computer setup questions
Will the technician see my files?
They may need to access files to transfer them. Ask how they protect your data and whether they delete any copies after the setup.
Do I need to buy software licenses?
Yes, for most paid programs. The technician can install your licensed software, but you must provide the license or account.
Can the setup be done at home?
Often yes, either at home or in a shop. Ask which works best for your computer and your devices.
