Vietnamese translation: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering vietnamese translation
Vietnamese translation clients need text that reads correctly to their readers, with tone marks and forms of address that fit the relationship. Show that you check every tone mark, ask which region the readers are in, and explain the forms you chose.
What customers ask
- Will the tone marks be correct?
- Northern or southern Vietnamese, which do I need?
- How do you choose the forms of address?
- Can you keep my layout?
- Will a second translator check the text?
- Can you translate both ways?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask which region the readers are in and what their relationship to the writer is, then recommend a regional usage in one sentence.
- Ask for the client's terms list and names, and confirm the Vietnamese form of each one in writing.
- Show a sample passage with a note on one form of address and one term chosen for the readers.
- Put the word count, the regional usage, the second review and the tone check into the quote, so the client compares like with like.
- Explain in your first reply how you check tone marks, so the client knows the text has been reviewed for accuracy.
- Confirm in writing what the receiving organization requires before you deliver.
What to put on your profile
- Sample passages with the regional usage and subject noted, shared with permission.
- Subjects you translate in, such as business, education, legal, medical or community notices.
- Your process: source review, glossary, translation, tone check and review.
- The formats and layout tools you work with.
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Offer a review once the Vietnamese text has been used with the client's readers, to correct wording they question.
- Suggest a shared glossary for future documents, so names and terms stay consistent.
- Offer to translate updates to the document, with the changes marked.
Licenses and permits
Vietnamese translation is not commonly licensed, so you usually do not need a license to offer it. Check with your state or local licensing agency for business registration, and keep a written agreement that names the language direction, the regional usage and the review step.
Questions
How do I show I can write correct tone marks?
Show a sample with the tone marks intact, and note the regional usage. Clients can see the accuracy directly in the text.
Should I accept work for a region I do not know well?
Say so, and suggest a reviewer from that region. Describe what the review covers in the quote.
How do I handle a client who wants one version for all readers?
Explain that a neutral version may sound less natural to some readers, and ask the client to choose the region that matters most. Put the decision in writing.
