Tango lessons: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering tango lessons

You teach tango, covering posture, the embrace, the walk and improvisation with partner connection. Your listing should name the tango styles you teach and the students you help most.

What customers ask

  • I want to dance at a milonga. Where should I begin?
  • How do I hold the embrace without feeling stiff?
  • Do you teach the walk before the steps?
  • Can my partner and I take lessons together?
  • How long does it take to feel comfortable on a crowded floor?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask whether the student wants Argentine tango, ballroom tango or both, and what they want to do with it.
  • Offer a short posture and walk check, and explain how the first classes will be built from it.
  • Show a sample class that works on the embrace and a simple walk with a partner.
  • Share a short clip of a walking drill so the student sees how you teach balance and connection.
  • Put the style, class count, practice tasks and re-check point in the quote.
  • Say how you prepare students for the social floor, so they know what to expect before they go out.

What to put on your profile

  • Your tango training, such as years of study, teaching credentials or time spent dancing in a tango community.
  • The styles you teach and the levels you work with, such as beginners or social dancers.
  • Photos or short clips of you teaching in a studio or at a milonga, with no student faces unless they agree.
  • The class formats you offer, such as private lessons, partner classes or social practice.
  • Reviews that name the student's goal and what they achieved, once they agree to share them.

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • After a class, suggest a short walking and balance task and the date of the next lesson.
  • Offer a practice session before a student's first milonga when their goal fits, and let them choose.
  • Recommend the next level once the student is ready, and let them decide.

Licenses and permits

No license is usually required to teach tango privately. Keep your training records and references ready, and check your state and local rules for any business registration you need. If you teach teens, have a clear written policy on partner rules and supervision to show parents.

Questions

Do I need a certification to list tango lessons?

Not usually, but students look for proof of skill, so list your training and experience clearly.

Can I teach online and in person?

Yes. Say which options you offer so students know what to expect before they choose you.
