Solar panel repair: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering solar panel repair
Solar repair is a data-led diagnosis job where the monitoring app, the string readings and the inverter log point to the fault. Installers who do it well explain the numbers in plain words and close the job with a verified production check.
What customers ask
- Why is my system making less than it did last year?
- Is the inverter dying, or is it just a reset?
- Is my roof leak a solar problem?
- Will you cover this under warranty?
- How do I know it is fixed?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask for the monitoring app login or a screenshot of the production chart, and ask when the drop started. Those set the test plan.
- Bring a multimeter, a clamp meter, an IV curve tracer if you have one, and the inverter manufacturer's diagnostic tools.
- Show the customer the string-level readings before and after the repair, and explain what the numbers mean in plain terms.
- Quote the diagnosis and the repair as separate lines when the cause is not yet known.
- Photograph any hot connector, cracked panel or burnt junction box before you touch it, and show the customer.
- Give the customer a written repair record with the production check, the warranty status and the next service date.
What to put on your profile
- Before and after production charts for repairs you have done, with the fault explained
- Photos of connector and inverter repairs showing the failed part and its replacement
- The inverter and panel brands you service, listed by name
Follow-up that helps the customer
- Offer a periodic check of connectors and junction boxes, with the results written up
- Suggest a shade review if a new tree or building has changed the production pattern
- Offer a monitoring setup review so the customer can see faults early
Licenses and permits
Solar repair is commonly performed under an electrical contractor license, and roof work may need its own license. A permit may be required for repairs that change the wiring or the inverter. Check with your state or local licensing agency and building department for the rules that apply to your work.
Questions
How do I handle a warranty claim for the customer?
Document the fault with the monitoring data, the test results and the photos. Confirm the warranty terms with the manufacturer before you start, and tell the customer what the claim will and will not cover.
What if the production drop is caused by a roof leak?
Tell the customer and recommend a roofer for the leak. Do not reconnect or remount panels over an active leak. Document the condition with photos before any electrical repair.
