GRE prep: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering gre prep
You prepare graduate school applicants for the verbal, quantitative and writing sections of the GRE. Your sessions work best when you start with a timed diagnostic and fix the section with the biggest loss first.
What customers ask
- Can you guarantee a score?
- Do you review writing samples?
- How much math do I need?
- How many practice tests will we do?
- What should I bring?
- How long until the test?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask the applicant's program, the test date, the target and any past scores, then say what the diagnostic will show
- Run a timed diagnostic in the first session and share the section results with the applicant
- Teach the verbal question types with a strategy, and show each one on a real question
- Put the number of sessions, length, practice test count, writing review terms and cancellation terms in the quote
- Review the applicant's writing with questions and specific notes, and have them make every revision
- Send a short note after each session with the section covered and the next practice test date
What to put on your profile
- Your academic background, including degrees and any test prep training
- The sections and levels you prepare applicants for
- Whether you tutor in person, online or both
- Results you can share with permission, without promising future results
- Your background check, shown on your profile, if you work with minors
Follow-up that helps the customer
- A practice test schedule for the next four weeks
- A writing review session before the applicant's next essay
- A quantitative content session for a gap the practice test showed
- A check-in after the real test to review the next steps
Licenses and permits
No license is usually required to tutor for a graduate admissions exam privately. Keep your degree or teaching credentials on your profile, and check with your state or local licensing agency for any rules that apply if you offer test prep through a school or program.
Questions
Do I need a graduate degree to tutor for the GRE?
Many applicants expect a degree or strong experience in the subjects the exam covers. Show your credentials and the sections you have taught, so applicants know what you can offer.
How do I handle an applicant who wants me to write the essay?
Explain that your role is to give feedback on structure and clarity. Show them how to plan the argument, and let the wording be their own.
