Doorbell installation: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering doorbell installation

You install doorbells, both wired and wireless, mounting the button and chime, testing the transformer and wiring and connecting household power through a licensed electrician where needed. Customers judge you on a chime that rings clearly from every room and a button that stays sealed in the weather.

What customers ask

  • Why does my doorbell only ring sometimes?
  • Can you put a video doorbell on my existing wiring?
  • Do I need a new transformer?
  • Will the chime ring in the back of the house?
  • Is the wireless bell as good as wired?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask whether the bell is wired or wireless, the chime model, and whether the bell works at all, then give a likely cause.
  • Test the transformer voltage and the wiring continuity before you reuse any wire, and report the readings to the customer.
  • Bring a transformer, low-voltage wire, a weatherproof box, wire nuts and sealant, so you do not need a second trip.
  • Mount the button with a weather seal, and check the wiring entry is sealed against water.
  • Test the chime from each room and the outside button from the walk, and show the customer the result.
  • In the quote, list the button, the transformer, the wire run, the chime and which licensed electrician does any household power connection.

What to put on your profile

  • Photos of sealed button mounts, neat chime wiring and video doorbell installs
  • The doorbell, chime and video doorbell brands you install, listed by name
  • Whether you handle wired and wireless systems, and the licensed electricians you work with

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Offer a check of the button seal and the chime after the first winter
  • Suggest replacing the battery in a wireless bell on the schedule the manual gives
  • Remind the customer to check the video doorbell's app settings for motion and alert zones

Licenses and permits

A transformer connected to household wiring can need a licensed electrician, and some areas require a permit for new wiring. Check state and local rules with your licensing agency before taking this work.

Questions

Do I need an electrician to install a wired doorbell?

The transformer connection to household power often needs a licensed electrician, depending on where you work. Refer that work out if you are not licensed for it.
