Dedicated circuit installation: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering dedicated circuit installation

Dedicated circuit installation is a short, clean job that solves a common problem, and the customer often books more work once they see the results. Electricians who win it match the breaker and wire to the device's rating, document the load, and label the circuit.

What customers ask

  • Do I need a new circuit for my range or my EV charger?
  • Can I run this from an existing outlet?
  • How do you know the breaker is the right size?
  • Will this overload my panel?
  • How long will the install take?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask the device name, its model, its rated load and where it will sit. Those answers set the breaker, the wire and the outlet.
  • Bring the device's rating label or manual to the visit, and check the breaker and wire size against it.
  • Show the customer the open breaker space in the panel, and explain why the new breaker fits the panel's capacity.
  • Quote the circuit, the outlet or hard-wired connection, and any protection as separate lines.
  • Test the circuit under the device's load, and show the customer the result before the device is used.
  • Label the breaker in the panel with the device name, and leave a note with the circuit's rating for future work.

What to put on your profile

  • Photos of dedicated circuits installed for ranges, EV chargers and workshop tools, with the breaker labeled
  • A panel photo showing a clean dedicated breaker with the label visible
  • The device types you commonly wire on dedicated circuits, listed by name

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Offer a load check for the next device the customer plans to add to the panel
  • Suggest a review of other high-demand appliances in the home, such as a freezer or a water heater
  • Offer to extend the circuit to a second location if the device will be moved later

Licenses and permits

Dedicated circuit installation is commonly performed under an electrical contractor license, and a permit with inspection is often required for a new circuit. Check with your state or local licensing agency and building department for the rules that apply to the job.

Questions

Should I add a breaker if the panel is nearly full?

Check the panel's capacity and the load first. A nearly full panel may still have room, but a service upgrade may be needed for the load. Show the customer the calculation before you install.

What if the device's label gives a range of breaker sizes?

Use the size the label specifies for the device's rated load and the wire size you run. Explain the choice in writing, and confirm the breaker type with the device maker's instructions.
