Countertop installation: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering countertop installation

Countertop installs are judged on seam placement, the fit at the sink and the edges, and how level the top sits. Win the job by templating carefully, showing the seam layout and naming the material and its care in the quote.

What customers ask

  • Where will the seams be, and will I see them?
  • How long between templating and install?
  • Is the material stain resistant and heat resistant?
  • Can you cut the sink and the cooktop, and who connects them?
  • What is the warranty on the top and the install?

How to win the job

  • Measure the cabinet tops on the first visit and check them with a level, then note any shimming needed in the proposal.
  • Draw the seam locations on the layout and show the customer where the joints fall before the slab is cut.
  • Show a sample of the material and the edge profile on the actual cabinets in the room, under the kitchen light.
  • Quote the cutouts by size and type, with the sink model and the cooktop listed, so the template is right the first time.
  • Name the seal and the adhesive products in the quote, along with the care steps for the material.
  • Explain the template-to-install time in the schedule, and state what happens if the cabinets move between visits.
  • Walk the finished top with the customer and check the seams, the sink and the backsplash joint before you leave.

What to put on your profile

  • Before and after photos of countertops with the seams, the sink and the edge profile visible
  • Close-up photos of the sink cutout, the seal and the faucet connection
  • Photos of templates and the seam layout before fabrication
  • A list of the materials and edge profiles you install, with their care requirements

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • A care sheet for the material with the sealing schedule and the cleaning products to avoid
  • A check visit after the first few months to look at the seams and the sink seal
  • A quote for a backsplash or a new island top, offered only if the customer asks

Licenses and permits

Countertop installation commonly does not need a license, but sink and gas connections often require licensed plumbers and a permit may apply to some plumbing changes. Confirm your business registration, insurance and any fabrication safety requirements in your state and locality.

Questions

Should I warranty the stone?

Warranty your fabrication and install, and pass through the manufacturer's warranty on the material. State that cracks from heavy impact or from a cabinet that moves are outside the warranty.

What if the cabinets are not level?

Show the customer the readings, quote the shimming or cabinet adjustment, and do not template until the cabinets are set. A top made from an out-of-level template will not fit.
