Countertop installation: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What countertop installation is

Countertop installation measures and templates the space, fabricates the surface in stone, quartz, laminate or solid surface, and sets it on the cabinets. It also covers the cutouts for the sink and cooktop and the sealed seams, plus the connection of the sink and fixtures.

Signs you need it

  • The old countertop is cracked, chipped or stained beyond what cleaning and repair can fix
  • The counter is too short, too shallow or the wrong height for the work you do in the kitchen
  • The edge of the old counter has pulled away from the wall, and water gets behind it
  • You want a new sink, a cooktop or an island top, and the surface has to be cut to fit
  • The current surface is laminate that is worn or peeling, and you want a harder, more durable surface

What the pro does

  • Measure the cabinets and the walls, and template the countertop on site, marking the sink, cooktop and seam locations
  • Fabricate the slab in the shop, cutting the openings and polishing the edges to the profile chosen
  • Check the cabinet tops for level, and shim the cabinets as needed before the countertop is set
  • Install the countertop with the adhesive the surface requires, joining the seams and checking the alignment
  • Set the sink, connect the faucet and the drain, and seal the sink edge with the product the manufacturer calls for
  • Clean the surface, check the seams and the backsplash joints, and walk through the care steps with the customer

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • Material type and grade, such as natural stone, engineered stone, quartz, laminate or solid surface
  • Square footage, the number of slabs needed and how the seams fall across the run
  • Edge profile, the thickness chosen and any special finishes or patterns
  • Number and type of cutouts, including the sink, the cooktop, the faucet holes and the outlets
  • Removal and disposal of the old countertop and the backsplash
  • Plumbing and any sink or faucet work, and the number of seams the layout creates

What a written quote should spell out

  • Material name, the grade, the thickness and the color, with the slab count
  • Edge profile named, with the number and location of seams shown on the layout
  • Cutouts listed by type and size, including the sink model and the cooktop
  • Templating visit and the fabrication steps, with the date the top is installed
  • Sink, faucet and seal products named, along with the warranty on the surface and the install

Questions to ask before you hire

  • When do you template the countertop, and how long between templating and install?
  • Where will the seams fall, and can you show me the seam layout before fabrication?
  • What is the material and its warranty, and how is it sealed or cared for?
  • Who connects the sink and faucet, and do they pull a permit if plumbing changes?
  • What happens if the cabinets are out of level when you template?
  • Can you show me a countertop you installed in a kitchen with a similar layout?

Red flags

  • The pro templates before the cabinets are set and leveled, and says the top will fit anyway
  • The pro does not show the seam layout before the slab is cut
  • The pro cannot name the material or the manufacturer's warranty
  • The pro says the sink does not need a seal or a clip and sets it dry

What you can do yourself

A homeowner can remove the old countertop only if it is laminate and the sink and gas lines are safely disconnected by a qualified plumber. Stone and quartz are heavy, brittle and must be templated and set by trained installers, because a cracked slab cannot be fixed to a usable standard once it is cut.

Licenses and permits

Countertop installation commonly does not need a license, but sink, faucet and gas connections often need licensed plumbers and a permit may apply to some work. Check with your state or local licensing agency and your local building department before any plumbing change.

Countertop installation questions

Which countertop material is best for a kitchen?

Each material has trade-offs in heat resistance, stain resistance, seam visibility and upkeep. Ask the pro to show samples in the kitchen light and to explain the care steps for each one.

How long does a countertop install take?

The main steps are templating, fabrication and the install day. Ask for the schedule with the template date and the fabrication lead time, since those drive the timeline.

Can a countertop be installed over existing cabinets without removing them?

Only if the cabinets are level and in good condition. Ask the pro to check the cabinet tops and to explain what has to be shimmed or repaired first.
