Accent reduction: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering accent reduction
You coach non-native or regional speakers to adjust pronunciation, stress and rhythm toward a chosen accent. Your listing should describe your training, the accents you coach and the clients you help most.
What customers ask
- I have an interview in English next month. Can you help me sound clearer?
- How long does it take to change my accent?
- Can you help with the th sound and word stress?
- Will you use my work phrases in the lessons?
- Do you coach teens, and how do you handle a parent who wants to sit in?
How to win the job
- On the first call, ask what the client needs the new speech for and which sounds they find hardest.
- Offer a short recorded assessment, and explain how it will set the focus of the first sessions.
- Show a sample session built on a real task, such as a presentation opener or a client call.
- Share a short before-and-after recording example with the changes explained, if the client agrees to share it.
- Put the target accent, session count, recording tasks and re-check point in the quote.
- Say what is realistic for the goal, so the client knows which changes to expect and when.
What to put on your profile
- Your speech training, such as a certificate in voice or pronunciation, a teaching background or relevant coaching work.
- The accents you coach and whether you are a native speaker of them.
- Photos of your coaching space or online set-up, with no client faces unless they agree.
- The client types you work with, such as professionals, students or public speakers.
- Reviews that name the goal and what the client achieved, once they agree to share them.
Follow-up that helps the customer
- After a session, suggest a recording task and a date for the next comparison.
- Offer a short review of progress after a set number of sessions, and let the client decide on more.
- Recommend a presentation or interview coaching session when the client's goal fits, and let them choose.
Licenses and permits
No license is usually required to coach accents privately. Keep your training certificates and references ready, and check your state and local rules for any business registration you need.
Questions
Do I need a speech pathology license to coach accents?
Accent coaching is different from speech therapy. Check your state and local rules, and do not present your coaching as medical treatment unless you are licensed to provide it.
Can I coach online and in person?
Yes. Say which options you offer so clients know what to expect before they choose you.
