Fishing guide: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What fishing guide is

A fishing guide takes you to productive waters by boat or on foot, supplying knowledge, gear and instruction for a day of fishing. People book a guide for a first trip to a new lake or river, for a special species, or when they want a full day with someone who knows the water.

Signs you need it

  • You want to fish a lake, river or coastal water you have never fished
  • You want to target a specific species during a season when it is hard to find
  • You have been fishing for years and still come home with nothing
  • You want a safe, guided trip with a boat, gear and a plan for the day
  • You are fishing with a group and want someone to handle the logistics

What the pro does

  • Meets you at the launch or the shore and reviews the plan for the day
  • Checks the weather, water conditions and safety gear before you leave
  • Chooses the spots based on season, species, depth and structure
  • Teaches casting, presentation and how to handle the fish you catch
  • Covers boat safety, the fishing rules and what to do if the weather changes

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • Length of the trip, such as a half day or a full day
  • Species targeted and how hard that fish is to find
  • Boat trip or wade or shore trip, and the travel time to the water
  • Whether gear, bait and tackle are supplied
  • Group size, since larger groups need more gear and time
  • Whether the guide provides meals, licenses or a launch fee

What a written quote should spell out

  • Length of the trip and the start and end times
  • Water location and whether launch or access fees are included
  • Whether rods, reels, bait and tackle are supplied
  • Whether a fishing license is included or is your responsibility
  • Cancellation and weather policy, including what happens if the trip is cancelled

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Do you hold a guide license, and can you show me the credential?
  • Is the boat registered and inspected, and does it carry the safety gear I need?
  • What species will we target, and how likely is it that we catch them on this date?
  • Do I need a fishing license, and do you help with it?
  • What safety gear do you provide, including life jackets?
  • What happens if the weather changes or the water is too rough?
  • Will you teach me something on the trip, or only fish for me?

Red flags

  • Does not carry life jackets or safety gear for the number of passengers
  • Promises you will catch fish or a specific size of fish
  • Does not ask about your experience or your swimming ability
  • Will not explain the fishing rules or license requirements for the water

What you can do yourself

You can research the water, the season and the rules before you book. Many anglers learn the basic knots and casting at home. Hire a guide when the water is new to you, when you want to target a species that is hard to find, or when you want to fish from a boat you do not know how to handle.

Licenses and permits

Many places require a guide to hold a license or registration, and boats that carry paying passengers often need the captain to hold a government-issued license. Anglers usually need a fishing license for public waters. Check with your state or local licensing agency for the guide license and the fishing license that apply to the water you fish.

Fishing guide questions

Do I need to bring my own gear?

Most guides supply rods, reels, bait and tackle. Ask what the guide provides, and bring your own sunscreen, weather gear and a camera if you want them.

Can a child go on a guided fishing trip?

Yes, many guides take children. Ask about the boat's safety gear, the supervision and whether the guide has a background check on file if children will be on the trip.

Do I need a fishing license for a guided trip?

In many areas, yes. Some guides include the license in the trip price, and some ask you to buy your own. Ask before you book.
