Engagement photography: what to know
What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.
What engagement photography is
A photographer leads a relaxed session with a couple before the wedding, capturing portraits at a chosen location for save-the-dates, the wedding website and keepsakes. Couples book one to get comfortable in front of the camera and to have a few photos that show who they are together.
Signs you need it
- You want photos for save-the-date cards, a wedding website or social media before the wedding
- You and your partner want a relaxed session to get comfortable in front of the camera
- You want portraits at a place that matters to you, such as where you met or a favorite park
- You want a sample of the photographer's work before the wedding day
- You want a few photos to hang or print as keepsakes
- You want a session that can be planned around the light at a particular time of day
What the pro does
- Asks about the places you love, the mood you want and how the photos will be used
- Plans a short list of locations and the best time of day for the light
- Arrives early to scout the spot and check the light and background
- Guides poses, movement and interaction so the photos look natural
- Edits a selection of images and delivers them in the agreed format
- Confirms the usage rights for the save-the-dates and the wedding website
What changes the price
Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.
- Length of the session and the number of locations visited
- Number of edited images delivered
- Travel distance to the locations and any permit or access requirements the site sets
- Whether the session includes a wardrobe change or a second look
- Whether prints, a card design or a digital gallery are included
- Time of day, since early or late light may need a different schedule
- Whether the photographer assists with a styling or hair and makeup plan
What a written quote should spell out
- Session length and the locations planned
- Number of edited images delivered and the delivery date
- Delivery format and whether prints or a card design are included
- Usage rights for save-the-dates, the wedding website and social media
- Who handles any permit or access requirement at a location
- What happens if the session must move because of weather
Questions to ask before you hire
- How many edited images will we receive, and how long until the gallery arrives?
- Can you suggest locations, and do you need permission at any of them?
- Can I see a full engagement gallery from a couple like us?
- Who owns the images, and can we use them on our wedding website and cards?
- What is your plan if it rains on the day of the session?
- How do you help a shy couple relax in front of the camera?
- Is your insurance current for shoots in parks or on private property, and can you share proof?
Red flags
- They show only a few heavily edited images with no full sessions
- They do not ask where you plan to use the photos
- They suggest a location without checking whether it allows photography
- They want full payment before you agree on the delivery and usage
- They cannot describe how they guide a couple through poses
What you can do yourself
You can choose a few meaningful locations, pick clothes that fit the look you want and bring a small backup outfit. You can also check the light at the time of day you plan to shoot. Hire a photographer for the posing, the light and the editing, since a relaxed couple photo session takes skill to make look natural.
Licenses and permits
No state license is usually required for engagement photography, so ask for proof of liability insurance and full sessions instead. Some parks and public sites require a permit for photo shoots, so check local rules with your state or local licensing agency before booking a location.
Engagement photography questions
Does an engagement photographer need a license?
Usually not a state license. Ask for insurance and full sessions, and check whether any location needs a permit.
How far in advance should we book?
Book early enough that the photos arrive before you need them for save-the-dates. Ask the photographer for the delivery time in writing.
Can we use the photos on our wedding website?
Usually yes, but confirm the usage rights in your contract before the session.
