Circuit board repair: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What circuit board repair is

A specialist diagnoses a fault on an electronic circuit board, replaces the failed components by soldering, and tests the board so the equipment works again without a full replacement. You need it when a machine or device has a board fault and replacing the whole unit would cost far more than the repair.

Signs you need it

  • A device powers on but does nothing, or shuts down after a few seconds
  • Parts of a device work and others do not, with no clear cause
  • A board shows burn marks, a swollen capacitor or a smell of burnt electronics
  • The device worked before a power surge, lightning or liquid spill
  • The manufacturer no longer supports the unit and a new board is hard to find

What the pro does

  • Inspects the board for burn marks, damaged parts and corrosion
  • Tests the power rails and the signal paths with a meter and other tools
  • Identifies the failed component and confirms the cause before replacing anything
  • Desolders and replaces the failed component, then cleans the board
  • Tests the board in the device under normal use and returns it with a report

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • The device type and how many boards are affected
  • How hard the failed component is to reach and replace
  • Whether the part is common or must be sourced
  • Whether the fault is a single part or several connected faults
  • Whether the board needs cleaning or corrosion repair after liquid or heat damage
  • Whether the device is worth repairing compared with replacement

What a written quote should spell out

  • The board diagnosis and the test used to confirm it
  • Each component replaced, with its part number
  • Labor for the diagnosis and the repair
  • Testing done after the repair, in the device or on a bench
  • Warranty for the repair and the parts

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Can you show me the fault on the board before you replace anything?
  • Are the replacement parts new, and what are their ratings?
  • Is it worth repairing compared with buying a new unit?
  • Will you test the board under load before I pick it up?
  • What happens if the fault is in another part of the board?
  • What warranty do you give on the repair?

Red flags

  • Says the whole board must be replaced without a test
  • Uses parts with ratings that do not match the original
  • Will not show the old component or the test results
  • Works on mains connected boards without isolating the power

What you can do yourself

Do not open or solder a circuit board yourself, since many boards hold dangerous voltage even when unplugged and parts can be damaged by heat and static. You can unplug the device, note the fault and when it started, and check the power cable and the outlet. Call a specialist for any board repair, and ask whether the board is worth repairing.

Licenses and permits

A license is usually not required for circuit board repair, but work on mains powered equipment may fall under electrical rules that vary by state and city. Check with your state or local licensing agency about any rules for that work.

Circuit board repair questions

How do I know if the board can be repaired?

A specialist can test the board and show the fault. Some boards cannot be repaired because the part is not available or the damage spreads.

Why did the board fail after a power surge?

A surge can damage parts that look fine at first. A specialist can test the board and check for hidden damage.

Is it safe to plug in a device with a damaged board?

No. A burnt or swollen board can be a fire risk. Unplug the device and have it checked before using it again.
