Chiropractic care: what to know
What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.
What chiropractic care is
Chiropractic care is provided by a licensed chiropractor who examines your spine and joints and uses manual adjustments and exercises within a care plan. People seek it for back, neck or joint discomfort.
Signs you need it
- Ongoing back or neck discomfort
- Stiffness that limits movement
- Discomfort after sitting at a desk or lifting
- A friend or doctor suggested a chiropractor
- You want a hands-on approach to complement other care
What the pro does
- A history and exam of your spine, joints and movement
- A discussion of findings and a care plan
- Adjustments or other hands-on techniques as appropriate
- Exercises or posture advice to do at home
- Follow-up visits and plan updates
What changes the price
Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.
- Visit length and number
- Added therapies or imaging
- Insurance coverage
- Specialty such as sports or pregnancy
- Clinic setting
- Follow-up schedule
What a written quote should spell out
- Visit length and how often to come
- What the exam includes
- Whether imaging or other tests are recommended
- Cancellation terms
- Billing and insurance details
Questions to ask before you hire
- What is your license, and how can I verify it?
- What will the first visit include?
- How many visits do you recommend, and why?
- Will you coordinate with my doctor?
- Are there risks I should know about?
- What do you do if I do not improve?
Red flags
- Promising a cure
- Telling you to stop medication or other medical care
- Pressure to prepay for many visits
- Recommending imaging for every client
- Cannot show a license
What you can do yourself
Posture breaks, gentle movement and ergonomic changes at your desk may help, but sudden severe pain, numbness, weakness or injury needs prompt medical attention. Talk with your doctor before starting care if you have health conditions.
Licenses and permits
Chiropractic is a licensed profession. Ask for the license and check it with your state licensing board.
Chiropractic care questions
Is it safe?
Risks exist as with any care. Share your history and ask about them.
Will adjustments hurt?
Many people feel little pain, but tell your chiropractor.
How many visits do I need?
It varies. Ask for the plan and reasons.
Do I need a referral?
Usually not, but insurance plans differ. Ask the clinic and your plan before the first visit.
