Car audio installation: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What car audio installation is

An installer fits speakers, amplifiers, subwoofers, head units and wiring in your car, works with the factory controls and tunes the sound. You need it when your factory system sounds weak or you want better clarity, bass or features.

Signs you need it

  • The factory speakers distort at higher volume
  • The sound is thin, with little bass or unclear vocals
  • The head unit no longer works with your phone or needs an upgrade
  • You want a subwoofer or amplifier for more power
  • The current system has noise, hiss or interference from the engine

What the pro does

  • Plans the install around your goals and the car's layout
  • Removes trim and panels needed to reach the mounting points
  • Runs power, ground and signal wiring with proper fuses and protection
  • Mounts the speakers, amplifier and subwoofer securely
  • Tunes the system and tests it at different volume levels

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • How many speakers, amplifiers and subwoofers are being installed
  • Whether the head unit must integrate with factory steering wheel or screen controls
  • How hard the car's dash and door panels are to remove
  • Whether the car needs an interface, adapter or wiring harness
  • Whether custom enclosures or fabrication are needed
  • Whether the install requires tuning on a computer or a laptop

What a written quote should spell out

  • The components installed and their models
  • The wiring, fuses and harnesses used
  • The labor for removing trim and mounting each part
  • Whether the head unit integrates with the factory controls
  • Tuning, testing and warranty coverage

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Will the system work with my factory controls and warning chimes?
  • Do you run the power wire with a fuse close to the battery?
  • Will any airbag wiring be touched during the install?
  • Will you tune the system after it is installed?
  • Do you warranty the install and the parts separately?
  • Can I hear the system before you finish the job?

Red flags

  • Says the install will not affect the airbags without checking the work near them
  • Runs power wire without proper fuses or protection
  • Will not show the wiring or the parts list in writing
  • Leaves trim loose or panels rattling after the install

What you can do yourself

A simple speaker swap in a door can be a manageable project if you have trim tools and patience. Disconnect the battery before you touch wiring, and do not work near airbag connectors. Hire an installer for amplifiers, subwoofers, head units or any work near the dash, steering wheel or airbags.

Licenses and permits

A license is usually not required for car audio installation. Check with your state or local licensing agency about any business registration that applies, and ask the installer about its insurance.

Car audio installation questions

Will a new head unit damage my airbag system?

It should not, if the installer works carefully around the airbag connectors and uses the correct harness. Ask how the airbag area is handled.

Do I need an amplifier for new speakers?

Not always. Some speakers sound better with power, but the match between speakers and amplifier decides it. The installer can check the specifications.

Why does the system hum after the install?

A ground loop or a poor ground connection is a common cause. Ask the installer to check and fix the ground points.
