Biology tutoring: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What biology tutoring is

Biology tutoring helps students with cells, genetics, ecology and anatomy, using diagrams, vocabulary practice and test preparation. Students and parents book it when a biology course has a lot of terms, when a genetics problem set is due, or before an exam on body systems or ecology.

Signs you need it

  • The student knows the terms for cell parts but cannot explain how the parts work together
  • Genetics problems are confusing, and the student mixes up dominant and recessive traits
  • The student memorizes body systems but cannot trace a process through them
  • Ecology questions about food webs and population changes are hard to follow
  • A test is coming and the student has many terms but no plan to study them

What the pro does

  • Checks the student's understanding of cells and basic vocabulary before the harder topics
  • Teaches each process with a diagram the student draws, such as the path of a molecule or a food web
  • Works through genetics problems with Punnett squares and step-by-step set-up
  • Practices anatomy and body systems with labeled diagrams and quick recall
  • Gives practice questions and vocabulary drills, and reviews the mistakes at the next session

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • Length of each session and how many sessions are in a series
  • The level, such as middle school, high school or college biology
  • Whether sessions are in person or online, and whether diagrams are drawn live
  • One-on-one tutoring versus a small group
  • How much exam prep versus concept teaching each session needs
  • Whether the tutor works from the school's textbook or their own materials

What a written quote should spell out

  • Number of sessions, session length and start date
  • Whether sessions are in person or online, and what drawing tools are used
  • Whether practice questions and vocabulary drills are included
  • Cancellation and make-up policy
  • Whether the tutor will share progress with a parent or the student's teacher

Questions to ask before you hire

  • How do you teach a process, such as cell respiration, so the student can trace each step?
  • How do you help with genetics problems and Punnett squares?
  • What do you do to help a student remember the body systems?
  • Will you work from my child's textbook and the teacher's method?
  • How do you prepare for an exam that mixes cells, genetics and ecology?
  • If my child is under 18, have you passed a background check?
  • What should the student be able to explain after the first month?

Red flags

  • Teaches only vocabulary lists and skips the processes
  • Does the genetics problems for the student and does not check their set-up
  • Promises a grade change without checking the student's skills
  • Does not ask about the course, the unit or the textbook the class uses

What you can do yourself

A student can draw cells and body systems from memory, make flashcards for the terms, and trace a process such as photosynthesis from start to finish. Practice genetics problems from the textbook. Hire a tutor when a process keeps falling apart in the student's mind, when genetics problems keep going wrong, or when an exam covers many units at once.

Licenses and permits

No license is usually required to tutor biology privately. If the tutor works in a school or program, that program may have its own rules. Ask whether the tutor has a degree or teaching experience in biology, and check with your state or local licensing agency only if the tutoring is part of a program with its own requirements.

Biology tutoring questions

Is memorizing the terms enough for a biology test?

Not usually. Tests often ask students to explain a process or apply a concept to a new situation. A tutor can help the student practice explaining each process in their own words.

How can I help my child study biology?

Ask your child to draw a process and explain it to you, and use the diagrams from class to quiz them. A tutor can help with the harder topics such as genetics.

Is biology tutoring useful for pre-med or nursing classes?

Yes. Many of the same skills apply, such as tracing processes and reading diagrams. Ask the tutor about the level and course you need.
