Vinyl flooring installation: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering vinyl flooring installation
Vinyl jobs are judged on seams, edges and the flatness that shows through thin material. Win the job by checking the subfloor, naming the adhesive and seam method, and showing the seam detail in writing.
What customers ask
- Will the seams show, and will water get under them?
- What happens to the floor if the subfloor is not flat?
- How long before I can walk on it and move the appliances back?
- Is the vinyl thick enough to hold up to pets and dropped pans?
- Can you lay it in the bathroom and the laundry room too?
How to win the job
- Check the subfloor with a straightedge and a moisture reading on the first visit, and write the findings and the leveling plan into the proposal.
- Name the adhesive, the seam method and the edge sealer in the quote, along with the set time for each.
- Show a sample of the vinyl in the thickness and the wear layer you are quoting, and lay it on the actual floor in the room.
- Plan the cuts around the fixtures on a sketch, and show the seam locations so the customer knows where the joints fall.
- Quote the removal of the old adhesive as a separate line, with the method named.
- Explain the set time for the adhesive and the date the room can take the appliances back.
- Include the quarter round or the transition in the quote, and state how it seals the perimeter.
What to put on your profile
- Before and after photos of vinyl floors with the seams and the edge details visible
- Close-up photos of welded or sealed seams around a toilet or sink
- Photos of the subfloor check and the leveling before the vinyl goes down
- A list of the vinyl types and adhesives you use, by room and use
Follow-up that helps the customer
- A care sheet for the vinyl with the cleaning products to avoid and the seam care steps
- A check visit after the first season to look at seams, edges and any lifting
- A quote for a second room or the basement, offered only if the customer asks
Licenses and permits
Vinyl flooring installation commonly does not need a license, but subfloor repair and moisture control may need a permit or qualified contracting. Confirm your business registration and insurance in your state and locality before you take the job.
Questions
Should I warranty the seams?
Warranty the seam work you performed and state what the warranty excludes, such as water from a leak the homeowner did not fix. Pass through the product warranty from the manufacturer.
What if the old adhesive is hard to remove?
Test a small area first. Some older adhesives contain materials that need special handling, so ask the pro to test for them before scraping or grinding.
