Stump removal: a guide for pros

What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.

Offering stump removal

Stump removal is an excavation job where the depth of digging and the quality of the fill decide whether the spot stays level. Your value is in locating utilities, removing the main roots cleanly and compacting the hole so the customer can use the area.

What customers ask

  • Will you pull the whole stump, or just grind it?
  • How deep is the hole, and how will you fill it?
  • Will the ground sink after you fill it?
  • Will you damage my sprinklers or lawn?
  • What happens to the soil you dig out?
  • Can you take out the roots under my patio?

How to win the job

  • On the first call, ask what the customer plans to do with the spot, since a build or a planting plan decides whether removal or grinding fits.
  • Locate the buried lines and sprinkler heads, and mark them on site before you quote, so the customer sees what you will avoid.
  • Put the stump count, the method, the digging depth, the fill material, the compaction and the restoration in the written quote.
  • Show the customer the depth you will dig to and the fill layers you will compact, so the finished surface is clear before the work starts.
  • Photograph the hole during the fill and after the compaction, and send the photos with a note on the layers used.
  • Offer to level and seed or sod the area after the fill settles, and explain the timing for the turf.

What to put on your profile

  • Before and after photos of stumps removed and holes filled and leveled
  • The equipment you use for removal, such as winches, excavators or hand tools
  • Your fill and compaction method, described in plain terms
  • The areas you serve and the kinds of stumps you handle

Follow-up that helps the customer

  • Offer a settling check after the first season and a top-up of the fill if the hole has dropped
  • Suggest a planting or sod plan for the restored area, with the timing for the first season
  • Send a note on the soil that was removed and how it was used, so the customer knows what to expect in the spot

Licenses and permits

Stump removal may fall under tree service or excavation contractor rules in some areas, and digging near buried utilities may fall under separate rules. Check with your state or local licensing agency and your utility locate process before you take the work, and confirm what the job requires.

Questions

Do I need a license to remove stumps?

Stump removal may fall under tree service or excavation contractor rules in some areas. Check with your state or local licensing agency before you take jobs, and confirm the insurance you need for digging near buried lines.

How do I fill a hole so it does not sink?

Fill the hole in layers with clean soil, compacting each layer before you add the next. Explain the method to the customer, and tell them the hole may settle, so they know when to top it up.

What if I hit a buried object during removal?

Stop digging, document what you found with photos, and tell the customer what it is and what it will take to remove it. Do not force the object out without the customer's agreement, and put any extra work in writing.
