Laminate flooring installation: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering laminate flooring installation
Laminate jobs are judged on the transitions, the gap and the squeak-free floor, and the subfloor decides most of those results. Win the job by checking the subfloor, planning the cuts and showing your expansion gap and undercut method.
What customers ask
- Will the floor click loose or move under my feet?
- Do you undercut the doors, or do you cut the casings?
- What do you do with the gap at the walls?
- Is laminate good for my pets and my kids?
- How long do I have to wait before I move furniture back?
How to win the job
- Check the subfloor with a straightedge on the first visit and note any high or low spots in the proposal with the leveling needed.
- Show the layout plan with the starting wall and the cuts marked, so the customer sees how the planks will fall.
- Explain the expansion gap in the quote, with the width and the trim that covers it.
- Name the underlayment and the vapor barrier in the proposal, along with the reason for each.
- Measure each door and show the undercut depth on a sketch, so the customer knows the casings will stay.
- Quote the transitions and thresholds per room, and list the metal or wood pieces used at each change.
- Bring a sample of the laminate in the wear rating and the finish, and show it on the actual room floor.
What to put on your profile
- Before and after photos of laminate installs with the transitions and the baseboard visible
- Close-up photos of undercut doors and the clean cut around a vent
- Photos of the subfloor check and the leveling work before the planks go in
- A list of the wear ratings and the underlayment types you use
Follow-up that helps the customer
- A care sheet for laminate with the cleaning products to avoid and the water spill steps
- A check visit after the first season to look at the joints and any gaps
- A quote for the next room, offered only if the customer asks
Licenses and permits
Laminate installation commonly does not need a license or a permit, but subfloor repair or structural changes may require credentials. Confirm your business registration and insurance in your state and locality before you take the job.
Questions
Should I warranty laminate against water?
Only if the product and the room are rated for it. Warranty the installation and pass through the product warranty, and state that spills left standing are outside the warranty.
How do I handle a room with a height difference at a door?
Use a transition or a reducer strip, and note the height difference in the quote. Do not force a floating floor into a height difference that will stress the joints.
