Backsplash installation: a guide for pros
What customers ask, how to win the job, and what to put on your profile.
Offering backsplash installation
Backsplashes are judged on the cuts at the outlets, the evenness of the rows and the finish at the countertop. Win the job by planning the layout on the wall and showing the outlet and corner cuts before you start.
What customers ask
- Will the outlet covers sit flush with the new tile?
- How do you handle the gap at the countertop?
- Can you do a herringbone or a mosaic without wasting too much tile?
- What grout or caulk do you use, and will it stain?
- How long will the job take with the sink and range in use?
How to win the job
- Measure the wall and mark each outlet and switch on the visit, then draw the tile layout on a photo of the wall so the cuts are visible.
- Dry-fit a row on the wall before the adhesive goes on, and show the customer the cut at the corner and the outlet.
- Name the adhesive, the grout or caulk and the edge trim in the quote, with the color and the product for each.
- Quote the outlet extenders and new covers as their own line, so the customer sees the electrical work that is needed.
- State the gap treatment at the countertop, with the caulk color and product named.
- Show a tile sample on the wall in the kitchen light, so the customer can see the color and the finish in place.
- Plan the work so the sink and range stay usable, and state the day the range can be used again.
What to put on your profile
- Before and after photos of backsplashes showing the layout, the outlet cuts and the countertop edge
- Close-up photos of the corner details and the edge trim
- Photos of a glass or stone backsplash with the adhesive method visible during install
- A list of the tile, glass and stone types you install and the layouts you offer
Follow-up that helps the customer
- A care sheet for the backsplash with the cleaning products suited to the material
- A check visit after a few months to look at the caulk line and the grout
- A quote for a second wall or a matching hood surround, offered only if the customer asks
Licenses and permits
Backsplash installation commonly does not need a license, but outlet and switch work can need a licensed electrician in many areas. Confirm your business registration and insurance in your state and locality, and refer electrical work to a licensed trade.
Questions
Should I do the outlet work myself?
Only if you hold the electrical license your area requires. Otherwise name the electrician in the quote and show who handles the outlet boxes and covers.
What adhesive is right behind a range?
It depends on the tile or glass and the heat near the range. Name the adhesive, and check the product data for heat and grease exposure before you set the tile.
