Senior transportation: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What senior transportation is

A senior transportation provider drives older adults to appointments, errands and social outings, often with extra help getting in and out of the vehicle. You need it when an older adult cannot drive or prefers not to, and needs a reliable ride with patient help.

Signs you need it

  • An older adult has stopped driving and needs regular rides to appointments
  • Getting in and out of a car has become hard or unsteady
  • A family member cannot drive the older adult to every appointment
  • The older adult needs a driver for groceries, errands or social outings
  • The older adult needs a ride to a medical or therapy appointment on a set schedule

What the pro does

  • Confirms the pickup address, the destination and the appointment time
  • Assigns a driver and a vehicle that suits the older adult's needs
  • Helps the rider in and out of the vehicle and with any walking aid
  • Drives the route at a comfortable pace and waits at the destination if agreed
  • Returns the rider home and confirms they are safely inside

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • The distance and the number of stops
  • Whether the rider needs help with walking, a wheelchair or a walker
  • The vehicle type needed, such as a sedan, van or wheelchair accessible van
  • Whether waiting time is included for appointments
  • The time of day and whether the ride is early or late
  • Whether the ride is one time, scheduled or on a regular basis

What a written quote should spell out

  • The pickup and drop off addresses and times
  • The vehicle type and any accessibility features
  • Any assistance level and waiting time
  • Mileage or distance charges and tolls
  • Cancellation terms and the booking method

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Are the drivers trained to help with walking aids and transfers?
  • Is the vehicle registered and insured for passenger transport?
  • What happens if the appointment runs long?
  • Do you help the rider into the building?
  • Can the driver wait and take the rider home?
  • How do you handle a no show or a late cancellation?

Red flags

  • Drivers who will not help with transfers or who rush the rider
  • Will not show registration or insurance for the vehicle
  • Asks for payment in cash only with no receipt
  • Changes the pickup time without telling the family

What you can do yourself

Keep a list of appointment times, addresses and any mobility needs, and share it with the company in advance. Ask the rider which walking aid they use and whether they need help at the door. Book regular rides in advance so the driver can plan the route.

Licenses and permits

A license is usually not required for senior transportation, but commercial passenger transport commonly needs state or federal registration and insurance when a provider carries riders for pay. Check with your state or federal transport authority and ask the provider to show its insurance.

Senior transportation questions

Can the driver go into the appointment with my parent?

Ask the company. Many drivers can help the rider to the door, but going inside is a separate arrangement that should be agreed in advance.

What if my parent needs a wheelchair van?

Ask for an accessible vehicle when you book, and confirm that it has the right lift or ramp for the rider's wheelchair.

How do I check that the driver is safe?

Ask for the driver's training and background check, and ask whether the company has a process for complaints.
