Microwave installation: what to know
What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.
What microwave installation is
Microwave installation mounts an over-the-range microwave or fits a built-in unit into a cabinet opening. The work includes bracketing the unit into studs or solid blocking, connecting it to the correct outlet, setting the venting and aligning the unit with the cabinets. People book it when they buy a new microwave that must hang over a range or sit in a cabinet.
Signs you need it
- You bought an over-the-range microwave and must mount it above a range
- The cabinet opening for a built-in microwave has to be measured and trimmed to fit
- The wall behind the unit has no clear studs, so anchoring needs extra blocking
- The unit needs a dedicated outlet that is not there yet
- The venting path or the vent duct does not match the new unit
- The old microwave is still on the wall and must come down first
What the pro does
- Check the model's install guide, the mounting height and the cabinet opening
- Locate the studs and install the mounting plate or brackets into them
- Connect the microwave to its outlet, using the dedicated circuit the manual requires
- Attach the venting duct and check that the air path matches the model
- Mount the unit, align it with the cabinets and check that it sits level and secure
- Run a test heat with a load of water and check the door, fan and light
What changes the price
Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.
- Over-the-range versus built-in or countertop, since each mount is different
- Whether the wall has studs where the brackets must go, or needs extra blocking
- Whether a new outlet or a dedicated circuit must be added by a licensed electrician
- Venting routing, including whether the unit is ducted outside or recirculates
- Removing and hauling away the old microwave and its mount
- Cabinet trim or modification needed to fit the opening
What a written quote should spell out
- Model and install type, over-the-range or built-in
- Mounting hardware, brackets and blocking, and whether they are included
- Whether the outlet or circuit work is included, and which licensed trade does it
- Venting parts and routing, and whether the unit is ducted or recirculating
- Warranty on the installation, separate from the appliance warranty
Questions to ask before you hire
- Will you check the install guide for the mounting height and the clearance?
- How do you anchor the bracket, and will it go into studs or blocking?
- Does the outlet meet the requirements, and who handles any electrical work?
- Is the unit ducted outside or recirculating, and does my kitchen suit that?
- Will you remove the old microwave and its mounting plate?
- Will you test the unit with a heat cycle before you leave?
- Does your warranty cover the mount if it loosens later?
Red flags
- A bracket fastened only into drywall without studs or blocking
- A microwave hung too low over a range, against the manual's height
- Venting left unconnected or leaking into the cabinet
- An electrical connection made without a licensed electrician when one is needed
- No test heat or door check before the pro leaves
What you can do yourself
You can clear the space, read the install guide, and use a stud finder to locate the wall studs. Unplug the outlet or turn off the breaker before you work near the wiring. Do not add or change an outlet, wire the unit, or cut into a cabinet without a plan; call a pro for stud-anchored mounts over a range, any electrical connection, or any venting work.
Licenses and permits
Mounting a microwave often needs no trade license, but a new outlet or circuit can need a licensed electrician and may need a permit. Check with your state or local licensing agency and building department before you start.
Microwave installation questions
Does an over-the-range microwave need its own outlet?
Many models call for a dedicated outlet, and the install guide states the requirement. Check the guide and have a licensed electrician add the outlet if the existing one does not meet it.
Can I mount a microwave on drywall alone?
No. The mount has to be fastened into studs or solid blocking to carry the weight of the unit, so ask the pro to confirm the anchor points before the install.
