Lockout service: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What lockout service is

Lockout service gets a locked home, car or business opened without damage, using picking tools or bypass methods, after the locksmith confirms that the person asking for entry has the right to be there. People call when they are locked out, when the key is inside, or when the lock has jammed.

Signs you need it

  • You are locked out of your home and the key is inside or lost
  • You locked your keys in your car, and the doors will not open
  • The key turns but the lock will not release, or the key snapped in the lock
  • You are locked out of a business and the staff cannot get in
  • You need access to a property you rent or manage, and the lock has failed

What the pro does

  • Confirm your identity, and the property or vehicle ownership or your right to enter, from the documents you show
  • Assess the lock type, the door or vehicle, and the safest non-destructive method for it
  • Open the lock with picking tools, a tension tool, a bypass tool or a long-reach tool, depending on the lock
  • For vehicles, work with a wedge and a long-reach tool carefully around the door frame and the side airbag areas
  • Check that the lock and latch work after the opening, and reset the lock if it was disturbed
  • Give you a receipt, and note the method used on the work record

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • Time of day, since calls after hours and on holidays take longer to schedule
  • Type of lock, whether a basic pin tumbler, a high-security cylinder or an electronic lock
  • Whether the door or vehicle opens without damage, or must be drilled or forced
  • Vehicle make and model, since some cars need specialized tools
  • Distance the locksmith must travel to reach you
  • Whether a new lock or key must be cut or installed after entry

What a written quote should spell out

  • The service call, the opening method and any travel line, shown separately
  • Whether drilling or forcing is included, and what the repair of that damage involves
  • Any new lock, key or cylinder supplied after entry
  • Notes on any change to the lock that you must approve before it is made
  • A receipt with the locksmith's name, the company and the time of entry

Questions to ask before you hire

  • What is your business name, and how will I know you are the one who arrives?
  • Will you open the door without drilling, and what happens if you cannot?
  • What proof will you need from me before you open the door?
  • What is the full price for this call, including after-hours time?
  • If the lock is damaged, what happens next, and do I approve it first?
  • Will you leave a receipt that shows the time and the method used?
  • Do you carry insurance that covers work on my vehicle or door?

Red flags

  • They quote a low price on the phone, then raise it at the door
  • They arrive without a marked vehicle or a business name
  • They drill or force a lock before trying a non-destructive method
  • They will not show ID or skip the proof of entry
  • They pressure you to sign a blank authorization or an open-ended repair

What you can do yourself

A homeowner can call a property manager or a trusted person who holds a spare key, and can keep a spare key with someone off the property. Do not use coat hangers, screwdrivers or other tools to force a vehicle door or window, because the glass, seals and side airbag sensors can be damaged. If anyone is in danger, call emergency services first, then call a locksmith for the opening.

Licenses and permits

Lockout services are provided by locksmiths and sometimes by others, and some states and local areas license or register locksmiths. Check with your state or local licensing agency about the requirements for the person you hire.

Lockout service questions

How long does a lockout take?

It depends on the lock, the locksmith's location, the time of day and the method needed. Ask for a time window when you call, and confirm the person and the company when they arrive.

Can a locksmith open my car without damage?

Often, yes, with the right tools and a careful approach. Some vehicles are harder to open without damage, and the locksmith should tell you the risk before starting.

What if I cannot prove I live at the address?

Ask the locksmith what proof they accept, such as a government photo ID that shows the address, or a lease or utility bill in your name. Keep the document and the receipt together.
