Grab bar installation: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What grab bar installation is

Grab bar installation anchors bars into studs or solid blocking in showers, tubs and beside toilets so they can take a person's weight. A pro finds the framing behind the wall, drills the correct holes through tile or fiberglass, and sets the bar with hardware sized for the wall. People book it after a fall, before surgery or as part of planning to age in place.

Signs you need it

  • A person is steadying themselves on towel bars, soap dishes or the tub edge
  • You are unsure what is behind the tile or wall, and a bar must go in a specific spot
  • The shower or tub is slippery, and the user needs support to get in and out
  • A bar is needed beside the toilet, and the wall there has no obvious framing
  • A previous bar pulled loose from the wall, or the anchors are damaged
  • A tub or shower surround is fiberglass, acrylic or tile, which each need different hardware

What the pro does

  • Find the studs or the solid blocking behind the wall with a stud finder and a check of the framing
  • Mark the bar positions at the height and angle the user needs, and check them for reach
  • Drill the pilot holes through the tile or surround with the correct bit, using tape to stop the bit slipping
  • Fasten the bar flange into the studs or blocking with the correct screws, not into the wall board alone
  • Seal the holes around the flange with the right sealant, so water does not get behind the wall
  • Test the bar with a firm push and pull in several directions before leaving

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • Number of bars and whether they are straight, angled or fold-down
  • Whether the wall has framing where the bar must go, or needs solid blocking added
  • Tile, fiberglass or acrylic surround, which needs different drill bits and sealants
  • Bar material and finish, such as stainless steel or a powder-coated finish
  • Access to the wall, such as a tub-shower combo or a wall that is hard to reach
  • Repair of the wall or tile after an old bar is removed

What a written quote should spell out

  • Each bar, its type, length and location, listed by wall
  • Whether the anchor is into studs or into added blocking, and how it is fastened
  • The sealant used around the holes and the tile repair method
  • Whether old bars or old anchors are removed, and the wall repair included
  • Warranty on the installation, in writing

Questions to ask before you hire

  • How do you find the studs or blocking before you drill?
  • Do you use the right bit for my tile or fiberglass surround?
  • What screws and anchors do you use, and are they rated for this use?
  • How do you seal the holes so water does not get behind the wall?
  • Will you test each bar with a firm push and pull before you leave?
  • Do you repair any tile you crack during the install?
  • Does the warranty cover a bar that loosens later?

Red flags

  • A bar fastened only into the wall board with no stud or blocking
  • Holes drilled without sealing, which lets water into the wall
  • Tile cracked during the install and left unrepaired
  • A bar that has not been tested under load before the pro leaves
  • A quote that does not say where the bar is fastened

What you can do yourself

You can find studs with a stud finder, mark the bar positions, and test the bar with a firm push before you use it. Use screws long enough to reach the framing, and seal every hole. Do not drill into tile without the correct bit and tape, and do not fasten a bar to the wall board alone; call a pro when the wall has no clear framing, when blocking must be added, or when the tile is brittle.

Licenses and permits

Grab bar installation is generally not licensed as a trade. Plumbing or electrical work near the bathroom can need a licensed trade, so check with your state or local licensing agency.

Grab bar installation questions

Can a grab bar go into the drywall alone?

Not with ordinary drywall anchors. A bar that holds a person's weight should be fastened into studs or solid blocking, or use a mounting system the bar's maker rates for that load and wall type.

Where should a grab bar go?

Place bars where the user reaches for support, such as beside the tub entry, inside the shower and beside the toilet. A pro can check the reach and the angle with you.
