Deep cleaning: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What deep cleaning is

A deep clean goes past regular upkeep to reach baseboards, grout, vents, inside appliances and the buildup that accumulates over months. People book one before selling a home, after a long stretch without cleaning, before hosting a big event, or when allergies flare and dust is the likely cause.

Signs you need it

  • Grout lines between tiles are darker than the tile and do not come clean with a daily wipe
  • Baseboards, door frames and light switch plates show a dull film that regular dusting misses
  • Range hood filters and the oven interior have a sticky brown residue
  • Supply and return vents have visible dust build up on the grille or the cover
  • Your home feels stuffy or triggers allergies even after normal cleaning

What the pro does

  • Inspect each room and note stains, hard water deposits, mold risks and any fixtures that should not be scrubbed
  • Remove dust from ceiling corners, crown molding, ceiling fan blades and light fixtures with a damp microfiber method
  • Scrub baseboards, door frames and switch plates top to bottom so the cleaning does not streak
  • Clean inside the oven, degrease the range hood and wipe the fridge coils and drip pan where accessible
  • Scrub grout with a grout-safe cleaner and a stiff brush, then rinse and dry thoroughly
  • Vacuum and wipe supply and return vent covers, and clean the bathroom exhaust fan cover

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • Square footage and the number of rooms that need full attention
  • The amount of grout, tile and natural stone that has to be scrubbed by hand
  • How long the home has gone without a deep clean and the level of buildup
  • Whether you want inside the oven, the fridge and the dishwasher cleaned
  • Whether the home has high ceilings, a second story or many vents that need covers removed
  • Access issues such as furnished rooms that need to be moved or heavy furniture that has to be shifted

What a written quote should spell out

  • A room-by-room list of tasks, including which appliances are cleaned inside and which are wiped outside only
  • The products used on grout, stone and wood, and whether any surface will be treated with a sealer
  • Whether the crew will remove vent covers and reinstall them, and whether vent ducts are cleaned
  • What is not included, such as wall painting, carpet cleaning or window tracks outside
  • The timeline for completion and what happens if an area needs a second visit

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Do you use a grout-safe cleaner, and will you tell me before using anything on natural stone
  • Do you clean inside the oven, degrease the range hood and clean the fridge coils
  • Will you remove and reinstall the vent covers, and do you clean the ducts or only the covers
  • How do you deal with mold you find behind a cabinet or in a bathroom corner
  • Do you move furniture, and do you put it back exactly where it was
  • Do you bring a vacuum and tools that can reach ceiling corners and high baseboards

Red flags

  • A deep clean quote that does not mention grout, vents or inside appliances at all
  • Use of acid cleaner on marble, travertine or other natural stone without asking first
  • A promise to clean inside sealed ductwork without the right equipment
  • A crew that wants to start without walking the home and noting problem areas

What you can do yourself

You can dust high surfaces, wipe baseboards and clean the outside of appliances before a crew arrives to save time. Call a professional for grout that needs a specialized cleaner, for oven and hood degreasing that takes hours, and for vents or ducts that are hard to reach safely.

Licenses and permits

Deep cleaning is not commonly licensed. Duct cleaning and mold remediation can be regulated in some areas, so check with your state or local licensing agency before hiring for those add-ons.

Deep cleaning questions

How is a deep clean different from a regular clean?

A regular clean keeps surfaces tidy. A deep clean takes apart the buildup, such as grout staining, greasy hood filters and dust on the tops of fixtures, that routine visits skip.

Do I need to be out of the house?

It helps. Chemical products and wet surfaces are easier to manage without people and pets around. Ask the company how long they expect to be on site.

Will a deep clean remove stains that are already set?

Many stains lift with the right product and time, but some, such as deep grout staining or etched stone, may need a different method or may not come out fully. Ask the crew for an honest assessment before the job.
