How to check a contractor license in Washington

Two minutes on the state site before work starts.

Why it matters

Washington requires contractors to be registered with the state, and registration includes a bond and insurance on file. A contractor who skips this leaves you with less protection if a job goes wrong.

What to do

Steps

  • Ask the pro for the contractor license number before you agree to anything.
  • Look the number up on the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) Verify a Contractor page.
  • Check that the license is active, the name matches the business that quoted you, and a bond and insurance are listed.
  • Electricians and plumbers working on their own should also hold the right trade certification. Ask to see it.

What we check, and what we do not

We check each pro against state records when they join and again on a regular schedule. That is a snapshot. Confirm the license yourself before work starts.

Questions

What if the number does not show up?

Do not hire until the pro explains it. A typo is possible, so ask them to re-send the number and look again.

Does it cost anything to request a pro?

No. Requests are free for homeowners.

Who sees my request?

Only the pros you choose, plus our review team, see your request. Pros get your contact details only for this job.
