Bagpiper: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What bagpiper is

A bagpiper plays bagpipes at ceremonies, memorials, celebrations and public events, often in traditional dress. People book one for a funeral or memorial, a Scottish or Irish themed wedding, a parade or a special solo moment.

Signs you need it

  • You want a traditional piping moment at a memorial, funeral or service
  • You are planning a wedding or celebration with Scottish or Irish traditions
  • You want a procession or a walk-in led by a piper
  • You want a solo piece played at a special moment, such as a toast or a farewell
  • The event is outdoors, such as a graveside, a field or a park, where pipes carry well
  • You want a sound that is recognized as traditional and that guests will remember

What the pro does

  • Asks about the event, the location, the moments that need piping and any tunes you want
  • Chooses a set of traditional tunes that suit the moments and the length of the event
  • Arrives in traditional dress with the pipes and any drone or case needed
  • Plays at the points you agreed, such as the procession, the moment of silence or the close
  • Coordinates with the officiant or host on when to start and stop
  • Packs up the instrument and clears the area

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • Number of pieces and the total length of the piping
  • Whether the piper leads a procession, plays a fixed moment or both
  • Outdoor or indoor setting and whether the piper needs to walk or stand
  • Travel distance and the time needed to reach the site
  • Traditional dress and any extra items the piper wears or carries
  • Special tunes or arrangements you ask the piper to learn
  • Whether the piper must stay for the full event or only for a moment

What a written quote should spell out

  • The moments the piper will play and the tunes for each
  • Length of the performance and whether a procession route is included
  • Traditional dress the piper will wear
  • Arrival, setup and departure times
  • Who the piper coordinates with on the day, such as the officiant or the funeral director
  • What happens if the piper cannot attend or the weather is poor

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Which tunes can you play for my moments, and can I choose them?
  • Will you walk in a procession, or play from one fixed spot?
  • What do you wear, and do you bring your own pipes and drone?
  • How do you handle outdoor weather, cold or wet ground?
  • Can I hear a recording of you playing at a similar event?
  • Where will you stand or walk, and how do you handle wind, rain or a loud venue?
  • Do you carry liability insurance that covers you and your equipment?

Red flags

  • They cannot name the tunes they play for common moments
  • They have no plan for weather or for walking on uneven ground
  • They say they can play any tune with no time to learn it
  • They do not ask about the timing or the moments of the event
  • They will not confirm the dress or the arrival time in writing

What you can do yourself

You can choose the tunes that matter to your family, the moments you want piped and the route for any procession. You can also check the site for access, parking and a clear spot for the piper to stand. Hire a piper for the playing, the procession and the timing, since piping is a skill that takes years and the moment needs to be handled with care.

Licenses and permits

No state license is usually required for a bagpiper, so ask for proof of liability insurance and references from similar events instead. Ceremonies in parks, cemeteries or public roads may need permission from the site owner or the local government, so check with your state or local licensing agency and the site before the event.

Bagpiper questions

Does a bagpiper need a license?

Usually not a state license. Ask for insurance and references, and check with the site about any permission needed for a procession or public piping.

Can a piper play at a funeral or memorial?

Yes. Many pipers play at funerals and memorials. Ask the piper which tunes are common for the service and confirm the timing with the officiant or funeral director.

Does the piper need a sound system?

Usually not. Pipes are loud and carry outdoors, so most pipers play without amplification. Ask whether the piper needs power or a microphone for any speech.
