Automatic gate installation: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What automatic gate installation is

Automatic gate installation adds a motorized swing or slide gate operator, with sensors, remotes or a keypad, wiring and a power supply, and tests the safety reverse features so the gate closes securely and safely. The operator is powered by electricity, so the wiring and the power connection belong to a licensed electrician, and the gate must be built to take a motor.

Signs you need it

  • A long driveway makes it hard to get out of the car in bad weather to open and close the gate by hand
  • A heavy gate is hard to open and close by hand, and an operator would make it easy to use every day
  • The property needs a secure entry that can be opened from a remote, a keypad or an intercom
  • A gate is used by many vehicles each day, and the operator will keep the timing and the closing consistent
  • A gate is being rebuilt or replaced, and a motor can be fitted at the same time
  • A gate must close automatically for safety or security, and sensors are needed to stop it on contact

What the pro does

  • Check the gate for weight, balance and smooth swing, since an operator can only move a gate that is already well hung
  • Plan the power supply, the conduit, the operator location and the sensor and keypad positions with a licensed electrician
  • Mount the operator on the posts or the ground at the planned location, with the arm or the rack fitted to the gate
  • Install the safety sensors and the reverse devices, aligned so the gate stops and reverses when something is in its path
  • Wire the controls, the remote receiver, the keypad or the intercom, and the power supply to the operator
  • Set the travel limits, the speed and the force, then test the safety reverse on each closing path and document the results

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • Gate type and weight, since heavy swing gates and slide gates need larger operators than light walk gates
  • Number and type of safety sensors, plus any loop detectors, photo eyes or edge sensors required
  • Power supply and wiring run from the house or a service point to the operator location
  • Control options such as remotes, keypads, intercoms, phone access or camera systems
  • Gate condition, since a gate that drags or sags must be repaired before the operator can be fitted
  • Access for trenching the power conduit and any concrete or surface restoration afterward

What a written quote should spell out

  • Gate type, width, weight and the operator model named in the proposal
  • Safety sensors and reverse devices, with the number and placement listed
  • Electrical work, including the circuit, conduit and who performs the connection
  • Control devices, such as remotes, keypad or intercom, with the quantity
  • Gate adjustments, travel limits and the safety testing performed
  • Warranty on the operator, the sensors and the workmanship, and what it excludes

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Who performs the electrical connection, and is that done by a licensed electrician?
  • What safety sensors do you install, and how do they stop the gate if something is in the way?
  • How do you test the reverse function, and will you show me the results?
  • Does the gate need any repair or rehanging before the operator can be fitted?
  • What happens if the power goes out, and can the gate be opened by hand?
  • What warranty do you give on the operator and the sensors?

Red flags

  • Offers to wire the operator with no licensed electrician or no plan for the power supply
  • Installs an operator on a gate that drags or sags, which strains the motor and the gate
  • Skips the safety sensors or the reverse test, or says the gate does not need them
  • Leaves the operator without a manual release for power outages
  • Mounts the sensors where they cannot see a child, a pet or a vehicle in the path

What you can do yourself

A homeowner should not wire an automatic gate operator, because the power supply and the controls involve line voltage and must be installed to safety rules. A homeowner can keep the gate hinges lubricated and the path clear, and can keep remotes and keypads in good order. Call a licensed electrician and a qualified gate installer for every part of the power and safety work, and keep children and pets away from a gate while it is moving.

Licenses and permits

Automatic gate installation involves electrical work that is often done by licensed electricians, and many areas require a permit for a gate operator or for a gate that is part of a secure or pool enclosure. Check with your state or local licensing agency and your local building department before work starts, since the electrical and safety rules apply.

Automatic gate installation questions

What happens to an automatic gate during a power outage?

Most operators have a manual release so the gate can be opened by hand, and some have a battery backup. Ask the installer how the release works and where it is located, so you can use it when the power is out.

Are automatic gates safe for children and pets?

They can be, when the safety sensors and reverse devices are installed and tested correctly. Ask the installer to test each sensor and to show you the reverse function, and keep children and pets clear of a moving gate.

How long does an automatic gate last?

The operator and the gate both wear with use, so the life depends on the gate weight, the use and the maintenance. Ask the installer for the maintenance schedule and the warranty on the operator and the sensors.
