Above ground pool installation: what to know

What the job involves, what changes the price, and what to ask a pro.

What above ground pool installation is

Above ground pool installation sets a frame or wall, a liner, and a pump and filter on a leveled site, usually on a yard that does not need in-ground excavation. People hire it when the set is large, the ground is uneven, or they want the pool up in a shorter time than an in-ground build.

Signs you need it

  • The ground slopes, dips or has old roots that need leveling before the pool goes up
  • The kit is large and the wall panels are heavy enough that two people struggle to lift them
  • You want a pool with a deck or fence added around it at the same time
  • The pump and filter need a clean, level pad and a safe power source
  • The liner or wall was damaged in storage and needs careful set-up

What the pro does

  • Check the site for slope, roots, buried utility lines and drainage, then mark the pool footprint
  • Level the ground and lay the base the kit calls for, such as sand or a rigid base
  • Assemble the frame, wall and top rail, then set the liner so it sits without folds or wrinkles
  • Mount the skimmer, return fittings and the pump and filter pad, and connect the hoses
  • Bring in water, check the level and make sure the wall holds its shape as the pool fills
  • Test the circulation and walk the owner through the pump, filter and daily care

What changes the price

Every job is different, so we do not publish prices. These are the things that move the quote up or down.

  • Size and wall height of the set, since larger and taller walls need more parts and time
  • Site slope and the amount of leveling, soil removal or base material needed
  • The surface it sits on, such as grass, soil, pavers or concrete, which changes the base work
  • Whether a deck, fence, steps or safety barrier is part of the install
  • Power access for the pump and filter, and whether a new outlet must be added by a licensed electrician
  • Access to the yard through gates, side paths and tight spaces

What a written quote should spell out

  • Pool size, wall height and liner type, with the kit brand named
  • Site prep, leveling and base material as separate lines
  • Pump, filter, skimmer, ladder and any other equipment by model
  • What the pro needs from you, such as electrical access and a water source
  • Whether the install includes the first fill and start-up, and what that covers
  • The warranty on the liner, wall and equipment, and who handles claims

Questions to ask before you hire

  • How do you level the site, and what base do you use for this kit?
  • Will the pool sit on grass, soil, pavers or concrete, and what does that require?
  • Who connects the pump and filter, and is a licensed electrician needed for the power?
  • How do you protect the liner from sharp edges, roots and sun?
  • What does the warranty cover for the wall, the liner and the pump?
  • Do you check the pool after the first fill and again after the first week?
  • How do you handle a damaged part found during set-up?

Red flags

  • They skip leveling and say the pool looks level by eye
  • They set the liner over rocks, debris or an improvised base
  • They run the pump cord across a walkway or plug the pump into a shared outlet
  • They do not check the wall for stability after the water goes in
  • They want payment before the kit has been checked for shipping damage

What you can do yourself

A homeowner can clear the site, pick a spot with good sun and drainage, and check the kit parts for shipping damage before set-up. Do not run new power to the pump, and plug it only into an existing protected outlet after a pro confirms that outlet is suitable. Call a pro for leveling, wall assembly, and any power work.

Licenses and permits

Above ground pool installs may not need a contractor license in every area, but new electrical work, gas work and permit-required site work often do. Check with your state or local licensing agency and your local building office before the install starts.

Above ground pool installation questions

Can I install an above ground pool myself?

Many people set up smaller kits with help, but leveling, the wall, the liner and the power connections are where most problems start. A pro can handle the parts that affect safety and the warranty.

Does an above ground pool need a fence?

Many areas have rules about barriers around pools, and some apply to above ground pools too, so check with your local building office. A pro can also tell you which barrier style fits the wall height and your yard.

Why does my liner keep wrinkling?

Wrinkles usually come from the water level, sun, a poor base or an uneven wall, so the fix starts with the set-up. A pro can check the base, the water level and how the liner is seated.
